How to put on a condom correctly
Condoms are a barrier form of contraception made from latex, polyisoprene or polyurethane. Using one incorrectly can put you and your partner at risk of an unwanted pregnancy or a serious sexually transmitted infection.
To put on a condom correctly, follow these steps:
- Check the expiry date and open the wrapper carefully. Do not use teeth or scissors, as they could damage the condom.
- Check for any tears or defects.
- Hold the condom with the rolled rim on the outside so that it will unroll easily.
- Pinch the tip, or reservoir, between your thumb and forefinger to make sure there is no air trapped inside. Trapped air can cause the condom to burst.
- Before intercourse, place the condom on the head of the erect penis. If you have a foreskin, pull it back first.
- Keep pinching the tip as you unroll the condom down the length of the penis.
- If you start unrolling it and realise it is the wrong way round, use a new condom. Pre-ejaculate may already be on the first one.
- Add a few drops of water-based lubricant to the outside of the condom to reduce friction.
- After ejaculation, while the penis is still firm, hold the condom in place and carefully withdraw from your partner's body.
Keep in mind:
Do not keep condoms in a wallet, as heat and friction can damage them.
Do not use more than one condom at a time.
Never reuse a condom.
